Democrats win the US House and Senate, taking full control of Congress

Democrats won the House and Senate, taking full control of Congress; NBC projected up to 258 House seats. Senate flips included North Carolina, South Carolina (Annie Andrews over Sen. Darline Graham), Texas (James Talarico over Ken Paxton), Maine, Kansas and Ohio. Trump said Republicans would have won "in a landslide" with him on the ballot, partly blamed the Iran war, and vowed to veto Democratic bills. Speaker Mike Johnson said he won't seek the minority leader job.

The day's record4 min read

Wednesday 4 November

Democrats' win in the US midterms defined the day. They took the Senate and the House overnight, and by evening they also held a majority of governorships. Trump said he would accept the result but pointed partly at the Iran war, and Vice President JD Vance went further, calling it the real reason Republicans lost. Markets rallied, with Brent crude falling below $100 for the first time since early October.

The result echoed through the day's other stories. Indirect US-Iran talks continued through mediators while both sides traded warnings. Israel, still without a clear election winner, absorbed Trump's announcement that US military aid will end. Indonesia's president sacked his chief of staff over alleged wiretapping, and Russia kept up heavy strikes on Ukraine, leaving Kyiv with its worst water outage of the war.

US to end $4bn annual aid to Israel · 7 developments

Trump announced on election day that the US will end its roughly $3.8bn in annual military aid to Israel after this year, saying Netanyahu agreed. Opposition leader Yair Lapid called it "one of the most severe political and security failures in the state's history". Michigan senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed welcomed the cut and urged an end to arms sales too. Israel's leadership remains uncertain after the 27 October election, in which Netanyahu lost his majority.

What X, Reddit and 4chan make of it.

X made a meme of the blue wave ("bluekkake") and argued over Polymarket, Reddit asked what Democrats will actually do with Congress, and 4chan called it a loss for Trump while ranting about Jews and Israel.

Where they split

X mostly turned the night into jokes and prediction-market fights, with the Iran war and Polymarket odds as the serious thread. Reddit was the only crowd arguing about governing, what the new Congress can and can't do with Trump's veto. 4chan split between fraud claims and a bitter, antisemitic reading that Israel and Jews lost, and most of its thread was flame war rather than analysis of the midterms.

Top comments from two live threads (r/Conservative market drop and r/news House result), so the sample leans to the r/news crowd and a few stock-market jokes; the Senate and Fetterman chatter is partly noise.

4chan

Small, heavily trolled thread sample; much of it is slurs and flame war, so the camps here are thin and the antisemitic posts are left out of quotes.
