US carries out limited strikes on Iran as talks continue via mediators

US officials said the US carried out limited, 'defensive' strikes on Qeshm Island and near Hormuz. Trump called it a 'minor attack' on an air-defence site, but told the FT late in the day he had no immediate plan to strike Iran. Tehran said the blockade must be lifted first and warned of a 'harder and broader' response. The NYT reported Central Command has a plan to strike from Wednesday, and that Israel warned the US Iran may consider chemical weapons.

The day's record4 min read

Tuesday 3 November

Two things ran side by side on Tuesday: a US military action against Iran that Washington described as small, and the US midterm elections, which Americans voted in all day. The US hit Iranian territory while its own officials spoke of progress in talks, and late reporting suggested a bigger plan was waiting for the vote to finish. By midnight UTC the first polls had closed and no results were in.

In Ukraine, Russia's overnight attack on the energy grid left Kyiv and several regions without power, and the toll from a deadly strike on an aid site rose through the day, while diplomats lined up talks for next week. In Israel, the post-election deadlock and Trump's announcement on military aid landed within hours of each other.

Where they split

X fought over who fired the Qeshm strike and whether the talks mean anything, with Iranian-diaspora and Israel-blaming posts on one side and US-confirmation posts on the other. Reddit's few comments stayed on Hormuz economics and oil, while 4chan's thread mostly drifted into slurs and the Israeli chemical-weapons claim.

  • Israel sabotaged the talks

The Qeshm strike was Israel torpedoing a glimmer of US-Iran diplomacy, and Washington is being used to pay for it.
