Democrats win Senate and House, and most governorships, in US midterm sweep

Democrats won the Senate, the House and a majority of governors' offices. They flipped Ohio's Senate seat and governorship, and Texas elected its first Democratic senator and governor in decades, Gina Hinojosa beating Greg Abbott. Jeffries is running for Speaker. Alaska's Senate race, 642 votes apart, and Mississippi's, separated by dozens, stayed undecided. Tech stocks added $750bn, but the Nasdaq 100 fell 6%, losing a record $2.3tn, its worst day since 2020.

Thursday 5 November

Democrats' sweep of the US midterms defined the day. They took both the Senate and the House, and the argument over why spread well beyond Washington, into the markets, the Republican leadership and the Iran war. Trump, Vance and other Republicans pointed to the war, Tehran shrugged, and reports said the White House was divided between fresh strikes and a wind-down. Iran also sent a nuclear proposal through Qatar.

Elsewhere, Paraguay's president resigned over a bank collapse and was impeached within minutes. Israel's election moved into coalition talks, while its president warned of Jewish extremist violence in the West Bank. Russia kept attacking Ukraine, France saw mass strikes and marches over living costs, and a second wave of hoax bomb threats hit flights across Europe. In London, Russell Brand was convicted of rape and sexual assault.

Israeli forces detained dozens of Palestinians overnight, and nearly 30 more in a raid on Dheisheh camp near Bethlehem. Where they split

X argued about whether the new Democrats are moderates and whether Schumer and Jeffries should go, with lots of mockery of the satirical NormalIslandNws post. Reddit kept to the DeSantis quote and the Electoral College compact. 4chan mostly ignored the midterms as a story and treated the Nasdaq plunge as the Democrats' doing, with young men's swing as a second theme.

Sample is the top comments in two threads, one a DeSantis piece and one about the NPVIC; the market plunge was barely mentioned and the thread skewed toward electoral-reform talk.

Mostly slurs and trolling with thin on-topic content; the stock-crash remarks are a minority of posts and many mentioned Trump or Israel instead of the midterms.
