Grass fire at Canadian military base kills four soldiers, 39 hospitalised

Prime Minister Mark Carney said four service members died in the fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, calling it one of the worst peacetime tragedies for the armed forces. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said 39 people were in hospital, at least 19 critically, some with severe burns. Officials described sudden high winds, with flames advancing 1 km in 30 to 60 seconds and crossing firebreaks before municipal firefighters helped contain the blaze. On Monday Carney said the cause was still unknown.

The day's record4 min read

Monday 19 October

A grass fire at a military training exercise at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta killed soldiers and left dozens in hospital, on the day Albertans voted on whether to stay in Canada.

Elsewhere the day was one of violence and its aftermath. Russia hit Ukraine's capital and energy network again, a Houthi missile strike killed dozens of recruits at a Yemeni army camp, an Australian MP was critically injured in what her prime minister called a deliberate attack, and France imposed curfews after its worst riots in years. Trump's remarks left both the Ukraine and Iran wars short of a settlement. Deadly attacks also hit Sudan and Mali, a Kenyan court convicted a cult leader of mass murder, and flooding struck eastern Spain.

Albertans vote on whether to stay in Canada or hold second independence referendum

Alberta separation referendum · 7 developments

Albertans voted on Monday on one question: should the province remain in Canada, or hold a second binding independence referendum? Polling suggested most favoured staying, though the campaign exposed deep divisions, not least within the separatist movement itself, and Premier Danielle Smith hedged her position. Prime Minister Mark Carney had joined a Calgary rally for a united Canada and said the US was trying to break the country up.

What X, Reddit and 4chan make of it.

X spun out theories about gas lines, Alberta's separation vote and false flags, Reddit argued over whether the wind made it an accident nobody could have prevented, and 4chan mostly turned it into racist jokes about Indian soldiers.

Where they split

X hunted for hidden causes, pinning the blast on a gas line, a false flag or the Alberta referendum, while Reddit mostly argued about whether the wind made it unforeseeable or the drill should have been stopped. 4chan's thread was mostly racist mockery of Indian soldiers, which carries no position on what happened.
