More than 2,300 arrested after worst French riots in years; Macron vows firmness

France's interior minister said more than 1,800 people were arrested after Saturday's riots; arrests passed 2,300 over the weekend as police clashed with looters in Paris on Sunday. More than 500 officers were hurt, about 1,500 shops were hit and a demonstrator died in Paris. Limoges's town hall was burned. In a televised address Macron said 'nothing justifies' the violence, vowed firmness and floated gathering bans. Politicians on left and right wanted interior minister Laurent Nuñez to resign.

Sunday 18 October

France dominated the day. A weekend of cost-of-living riots, the worst the country has seen in years, ended with Macron on national television promising firmness, ministers in crisis talks and calls from the left and right for his interior minister to go. Italy's protests also turned violent in Milan, and in Tirana, Albania, a sixth day of student demonstrations ended with Supreme Court offices on fire.

A deadly fire at a Canadian military base in Alberta was the day's other shock. Oil tied much of the rest together. Iran said a tanker hit a mine in the Strait of Hormuz while the US blockade of its ports stayed in place. Washington framed its pause on Russia sanctions around fuel prices. Russia and Ukraine traded drone and missile strikes, and Trump and Zelensky argued over refineries and Patriot missiles. Houthi drones kept targeting Saudi Arabia.

A live-fire training exercise reportedly hit a gas line or well; officials had not confirmed a cause.

Trump says Russia sanctions delay keeps Putin talking; Rubio calls it 60-day pause

Trump waives Russia sanctions law · 27 developments

Rubio said the waiver, signed Friday, gives time to analyse the effect on the global and US economies as conflicts 'are starting to crash into each other' and push up oil and diesel prices. Energy Secretary Wright called it 'a carrot, not a lifeline' for Russia, and Bessent said nothing was lifted, only waived. Trump said he delayed sanctions so as not to drive Putin from talks and could sign them later. Bipartisan critics and the UK objected.

What X, Reddit and 4chan make of it.

X turned the riots into proof that Europe, migration and Democrats had failed, Reddit argued over whether the protest was about schools or the bond market, and 4chan mostly mocked the looting and ran livestreams.

Where they split

X went straight to race, immigration and US politics, using the riots to argue about Democrats and mass migration, while Reddit stayed on the policy: whether austerity, the bond market or police tactics caused it. 4chan was the most openly racist and conspiratorial, with a flood of slur-laden posts, but also a lot of watching livestreams and mocking the looting.

  • Riots prove immigration failed

What began as student protests has been taken over by migrants and Muslim rioters, and the French government's refusal to admit it shows where mass immigration leads.
