Trump waives Russia sanctions and tariffs days before they were due to take effect

Trump signed an order waiving many provisions of the Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, including 500% tariffs on Russian goods and secondary duties on big buyers of Russian energy. At least eight Republican senators criticised the waiver or the diesel deal with Putin, which House Democrats and one Republican want to block. Zelensky said the waiver only rewards Putin and expects more relief. Trump blames him for the failed 'energy ceasefire'.

The day's record4 min read

Saturday 17 October

The day's defining move came from Washington. Days before the Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act was due to bite, Trump waived much of it. That drew criticism from members of his own party and left Kyiv more openly at odds with the White House, while Russia kept hitting Ukraine's power grid through the night and the day.

In the Gulf, Trump insisted his naval blockade of Iran was working even as Iran's Revolutionary Guards declared Hormuz closed and tankers burned. Cost-of-living protests in France turned into the country's worst rioting in years and spilled into Belgium. Wind-driven fires burned homes in Southern California, the UAE was reported to be returning to the Yemen fight, and settler violence in the West Bank reached European diplomats.

Trump says Iran blockade is working as Hormuz traffic stays far below normal

    US-Iran war · 255 developments

Trump said the blockade was effective, that no Iranian ship had crossed Hormuz, and told a Kentucky rally the war will end 'very quickly'. UKMTO said 12 vessels were struck in a week, 10 of them in Hormuz, with transits about 70% below prewar levels. CENTCOM said it had redirected 138 vessels and 97% of crossings succeed. The IRGC navy declared the strait closed after a supertanker hit a mine. Brent reached $110.

Settlers attack European diplomats in Taybeh as olive-harvest violence tops all of 2025

West Bank settler violence and raids · 143 developments

Masked settlers on quad bikes surrounded French, Belgian and Polish diplomats in Taybeh, beating a French mayor and smashing a Belgian consular vehicle window. France demanded arrests. Israel's Foreign Minister Saar condemned the 'rioters' but faulted the diplomats for not coordinating with the army. Netanyahu's office alleged a 'smear campaign', and Rubio said the US wants Israel to crack down. OCHA counted nearly 200 harvest-related settler attacks, against 185 in all of 2025: one Palestinian killed, over 120 injured.

The fast-spreading Norte Fire in Orange County began in San Clemente and burned at least six homes there and in San Juan Capistrano. About 16,000 residents were ordered to evacuate and two firefighters were injured. Intense Santa Ana winds and unseasonably high temperatures fuelled fires across Southern California. Brush fires in Malibu, Azusa and Camp Pendleton also forced evacuations, and utilities cut power to well over 100,000 customers.

    Yemen war · 167 developments

The UAE will resume paying some government forces in the south while Saudi Arabia provides air cover, Yemeni sources told the Guardian. Egypt's Sisi pledged 'any measure' to defend Saudi Arabia if asked, with parliament due to meet Sunday. Taiz's military command said 378 Houthi fighters were killed or wounded, and Houthi shelling killed a woman there. On Friday, two missiles struck near Aden airport, 500 metres from a Yemenia plane preparing to take off.

What X, Reddit and 4chan make of it.

X called Trump's Russia waiver a traitor's gift to Putin and argued over Massie, Reddit blamed Trump's midterm and Kushner-Witkoff dealings, and 4chan mostly ignored it for Ukraine tank talk and a Biden-vs-Trump slapfight.

Where they split

X fixed on the Trump-as-traitor line and on Massie's vote, with Congress and Massie replies doing most of the fighting. Reddit went for money and the Kushner-Witkoff angle and the bigger 'America's reputation is wrecked' worry, while 4chan barely engaged, turning the thread into Ukraine tank talk and Biden-vs-Trump bickering.

  • Traitor, Putin's puppet

Trump waived the Graham sanctions because he is compromised or serving Putin, and the country should react with impeachment, the 25th Amendment, or prosecution.
