Iran says it shot down US drone over Hormuz as Trump rules out pre-midterm attack

The IRGC said it shot down a US MQ-9 drone over the Strait of Hormuz and that three tankers hit Iranian mines south of it. Trump said the US won't attack Iran before the November 3 midterms but keeps its port blockade; a third carrier group is being sent there. Pakistan's army chief met Iranian leaders in Tehran; Iran's security chief ruled out moving enriched uranium abroad. Araghchi said Hormuz stays closed until the US accepts Iran's terms.

Tuesday 20 October

The US-Iran war stayed at the center of Tuesday: no new attacks, but no deal either. Tehran claimed a downed American drone and said Hormuz would stay shut, while Pakistan and Qatar passed messages between the sides. The war also followed Trump to a Kansas rally, where he blamed NATO allies for staying out of it and said the US could leave the alliance.

In Europe, the day was about security. France had a calm night after its worst riots in years, then ordered more curfews and promised troops for Saturday, and Italy approved soldiers for Milan. In Ukraine, Russian strikes on Kyiv and the energy grid continued while Zelensky's Oslo talks set up a Wednesday meeting between US envoys and Putin. Elsewhere, a Houthi missile strike killed dozens in Yemen and an Australian MP lost a leg in a car attack.

What X, Reddit and 4chan make of it.

X argued over whether a peace deal is real while the carrier news read as a war signal; Reddit saw a pre-midterm escalation plot; 4chan spent its thread on Trump's LA remark, not Iran.

Hostile and partisan, arguing about Trump's remarks

Where they split

Reddit's top comments treated the carriers as a plan to escalate after the vote and jumped to election-cancellation fears, while X split between deal-skeptics calling the peace news a market con and users fact-checking the Fox report on carrier positions. 4chan's thread on the story was about Trump's LA and San Diego remark, not the carriers, so it hardly takes a side on this story.

The carriers are a prelude to a strike or ground push once the November 3 vote is past, and Trump's no-attack pledge is cover.
