Trump says Iran war ends soon, as Gulf allies are told to expect strikes

Trump says the war is "going to get wrapped up soon" and that "there are talks", but MS NOW, citing three Gulf Arab officials, reports allies were told to prepare for a short, intense round of US strikes on November 4. Overnight the IRGC said it hit four tankers in the Strait of Hormuz; UKMTO counts Hormuz traffic about 70% below pre-war levels. Germany's Merz said the war has cost Europe over 100bn euros ($112bn) in extra energy costs.

Saturday 31 October

Mixed signals on the Iran war lead the day. Donald Trump says it will be over soon and that Tehran wants to talk, while Gulf officials say allies have been warned to prepare for a fresh round of US strikes just after the November 3 midterms.

Elsewhere, Poland's president joined protesters at the country's top court after the government suspended its chief judge. Binance's record hack now has a suspected North Korean link, and US courts again pushed back on the Justice Department's attempts to interfere with California's ballots ahead of the midterms.

A tribunal judge accused him of choosing "physical confrontation". The opposition PiS calls the suspension a coup.

What X, Reddit and 4chan make of it.

X mocked the timing and the MS NOW source, Reddit blamed a midterm-driven escalation, and 4chan mostly shrugged at the strike talk while trading racist abuse about Iranian women.

Where they split

X split between dismissing the MS NOW report and ridiculing Trump's timing as a TACO tactic, while Reddit took the strike at face value and read it as a lame-duck or midterm power play. 4chan barely engaged with the policy, using the thread mainly for memes and slurs.
