Trump says Iran war is ending as ships sink near Hormuz and oil stays above $100

Trump told an Arizona rally that Iran has lost its navy and air defences and the US has "total control" of Hormuz. He said the US won't attack Iran before the November 3 midterms, though the blockade stays. CBS and CNN reported plans to use the "mother of all bombs" if combat resumes. Yet the container ship GFS Pride sank, Iran said a cargo ship hit a mine (Centcom denied it) and its navy said it set a tanker ablaze for breaking the blockade. Brent was near $104.

The day's record4 min read

Thursday 15 October

Thursday was dominated by the Iran war and what it is doing to the global economy. Trump promised an early end while attacks on shipping around the Strait of Hormuz kept climbing and energy prices stayed high. Together with a hotter-than-expected US inflation reading, that fed a heavy sell-off across Asian markets, with chipmakers hit hardest.

The day's worst human tolls came from two schools: a roof collapse in Peshawar, Pakistan, that killed dozens of pupils, and a shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon. In Ukraine, a huge overnight Russian drone attack pushed Zelensky to drop his restraint on refineries, and drones also set two tankers alight in Romanian waters. Houthi strikes kept Saudi airports and the region's calendar in disruption.

Zelensky lifts pause on refinery strikes after Russia fires 580 drones overnight

    Russia-Ukraine war · 383 developments

Russia launched two missiles and 580 drones overnight, hitting 31 locations; Ukraine said it downed 536. Zelensky told the Financial Times the ban on hitting refineries was lifted after three days: "We're done." Evening strikes cut power and water pressure in parts of Kyiv, whose three main CHPs reportedly stopped generating, and CNN reported Ukraine had run out of Patriot interceptors. Reuters said the order to limit Ukraine's Starshield access came from inside the White House.

What X, Reddit and 4chan make of it.

X fixated on Iran's midterm oil game and the chess metaphor, Reddit mocked Trump's broken promises and blamed the leaders he killed, and 4chan argued over whether the war was already won.

Where they split

X treated the story as a strategic puzzle about Iran's midterm play and gas prices, while Reddit used it to pile on Trump's credibility and the assassinations, and 4chan fought over whether the war had already been won.

  • Iran playing midterm oil chess

Tehran is deliberately timing tanker attacks in Hormuz to keep oil prices high through the November midterms, and it's working.
