Iran steps up Hormuz ship attacks as Trump threatens a "big blow"

Two senior Iranian officials told Reuters that Tehran began using different tactics about 10 days ago against ships that violate its restrictions, to keep oil prices high and sway the US vote. The container ship GFS Pride sank with all 21 crew rescued, and the bulk carrier Cape Dao also sank. Trump has said the US will not attack before the November 3 midterms, yet told an Alaska rally the US would "deal them a big blow".

The day's record4 min read

Wednesday 14 October

Iran's pressure on oil markets defined the day. Two senior Iranian officials told Reuters that Tehran had changed tactics against ships in the Strait of Hormuz to keep prices high before the US midterms, and two vessels sank during the day. In Yemen, the Houthis kept up their strikes on Saudi Arabia, and Trump blamed Iran for the rise in oil prices.

Russia hit Ukraine's power system again overnight, and the question of US intelligence sharing with Kyiv hung over Zelensky's London visit. Trump's diesel arrangement with Moscow drew objections from Italy's Meloni and a bipartisan group in the US Senate.

Elsewhere, Turkish authorities took over the opposition channel Halk TV, Pakistan's emergency rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa brought police fire on protesters, and the Vatican gave updates on Pope Leo XIV's recovery from lung surgery.

Houthi missiles hit Saudi Aramco site in Dhahran; Trump blames Iran

Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia · 229 developments

The Houthis warned civilians to leave Saudi oil sites they called "legitimate targets", then a barrage hit Aramco's Dhahran headquarters. The energy ministry reported no injuries, but a fire spread across several floors. The Houthis claimed attacks on Aramco sites and Riyadh's airport, closed until October 17, and vowed more; they said they hit a Saudi Typhoon over Saada, which Riyadh did not confirm. Trump said the Houthis had "emerged again", probably at Iran's behest, to lift oil prices.

Russian strike leaves 600,000 without power in Ukraine; Zelensky cites Trump's energy truce

    Russia-Ukraine war · 383 developments

Overnight, 39 missiles and about 128 drones hit energy sites, leaving 600,000 without power. Suspilne counted at least 17 killed across Ukraine in 24 hours, including six in Lutsk, and a Kropyvnytskyi drone raid killed three. Zelensky called it "ostentatious disrespect" for Trump's energy ceasefire, which the Kremlin says was never specified. The Washington Post and Semafor reported the US may halt intelligence sharing; Trump said it continues.

Meloni and 12 US senators object to Trump's Russian diesel deal

    US-Russia diesel supply deal · 46 developments

After a call with Putin, Trump announced Russia will supply diesel to US and global markets under a temporary Treasury sanctions licence through April 7, 2027. Twelve US senators, six from each party, asked him to rescind it, calling it "a gift to our adversary". Italy's Meloni called it a "very risky choice", as did Zelensky, Germany, the UK and the EU. Russia said negotiations were still under way, while Trump claimed over 300,000 tons would flow immediately.

What X, Reddit and 4chan make of it.

X spent its time arguing over which pundit was wrong about Iran, Reddit blamed Trump for killing the negotiators and walking into a war with no plan, and 4chan wanted to know the exit strategy and mostly found slurs.

Where they split

X split its attention between the strike-timing reporting and a shouting match about one pundit's predictions, with Israel's role a sharp secondary thread. Reddit was the angriest about Trump's competence, while 4chan treated the exit question as a joke board with a few real strategy takes and a lot of antisemitic and racist noise.
