Houthis claim third strike on Riyadh airport; Saudi Arabia vows 'serious' response

Riyadh's King Khalid airport was hit twice over the weekend, and the Houthis claimed a third strike on Monday evening; the coalition said it destroyed that missile. Saturday's strike killed at least 18 and injured over 300; Sunday's killed a Pakistani. The airport will stay shut until Saturday evening, and Saudi Arabia is probing its air-defence failures. Reuters reported that public warnings had stopped days earlier. The energy minister vowed a 'serious' response; the WSJ says Riyadh is short of interceptors.

Monday 12 October

The Gulf set the tone on Monday. The Houthis claimed a third missile strike on Riyadh's main airport after two deadly weekend attacks, and Saudi Arabia promised to respond. Iran's Guards said they hit a tanker near Hormuz. Oil fell for a time after Trump announced a Russia-Ukraine energy ceasefire, but Brent was back near $107 as shipping through the strait stayed far below normal.

Energy ran through the other big stories too. Moscow never confirmed Trump's truce, and Republicans broke with him over his deal to sell Russian diesel. In the US, federal agents searched Rep. Ilhan Omar's home. Elsewhere, Pakistan's federal government took over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from Imran Khan's party, and thousands marched on India's Supreme Court.

Iran's Guards hit tankers near Hormuz as oil flows through the strait collapse

Iran war effects on oil market · 84 developments

Iran's Guards said they hit a supertanker in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday night and set it ablaze, and said they were targeting ships in an alleged US-UAE oil shuttle. The Petro Dolphin burned off Oman, with two Indian crew missing. The WSJ says flows through the strait fell from 22.8 million barrels a day on Thursday to 2 million on Saturday. Brent rose to near $107, and OPEC+ ministers said shipping and insurance now top a third of crude's value.

What X, Reddit and 4chan make of it.

X mostly watched the Riyadh airport carnage through a sectarian and "Karma" lens, Reddit argued over Saudi incompetence and whether to join the war, and 4chan barely mentioned the airport at all, filing it under oil prices and its usual partisan fight.

Where they split

X spun the attack into sectarian and karmic talk about Saudi and Pakistan, with pilgrims at the centre, while Reddit's thread on Trump's possible strikes turned it into a debate about Saudi military competence and whether America should join. 4chan's few posts ignored the airport and talked oil prices and Trump.

  • Karma for the Saudis

Saudi Arabia is reaping what it sowed, by funding jihadist ideology abroad and bombing Yemen for a decade, so the Houthi strike is payback.
