Houthis hit Riyadh and Dammam airports; Saudi Arabia vows response, US may join

Saudi aviation authorities said 12 people were killed and 309 injured when a Houthi missile hit King Khalid International Airport on Saturday. An American and an Indian national were among the dead. Saudi Arabia vowed a "decisive response", and Trump said the US may join strikes on the Houthis. On Sunday a second strike hit two terminals, starting a fire, killing a Pakistani and wounding 11. Saudi authorities also confirmed an attack on Dammam airport. The Saudi and Iranian foreign ministers discussed de-escalation.

The day's record3 min read

Sunday 11 October

The Houthi missile strikes on Saudi Arabia's airports defined the day. Riyadh's main airport was hit a second time, Dammam's was attacked too, and the open question was whether Saudi Arabia would retaliate with US backing. Condemnation came from the UN, the EU, Russia and the region. Saudi shares fell, airlines suspended or cancelled flights, and the US and UK tightened travel advice.

Trump's pressure on Ukraine ran alongside it, and his announced energy truce was met with confusion, with Russia still hitting Ukrainian power infrastructure. The US blockade of Iran continued, with more incidents around Hormuz. Elsewhere, a migrant boat disaster off Djibouti, Hurricane Simon closing on Mexico, emergency rule in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the spread of Ebola in Congo all drew attention.

Trump announces Russia-Ukraine 'energy ceasefire' Kyiv hadn't heard of; Zelensky ties elections to truce

    Russia-Ukraine peace talks prospects · 180 developments

Trump said Zelensky must hold elections and blamed Ukraine, not the Iran war, for record US diesel prices. Britain and Germany backed Zelensky, who said Ukraine would hold elections after a 60-day ceasefire. Trump then announced an "energy ceasefire" without terms. Kyiv, caught off guard, said it would accept if Russia did. Moscow said only that it stays open to talks, and the White House said Russia was "thinking about it". Witkoff and Kushner postponed their Moscow trip.

CENTCOM said a fighter jet disabled the Panama-flagged Ocean Molica after it left an Iranian port, without harming the crew. Since July 14, 135 vessels have been redirected, four disabled and 10 IRGC-linked tankers destroyed. Trump said the US won't attack before the November 3 midterms, while Iran's security chief called Washington's reply to its deal conditions "inadequate". The IRGC said a supertanker hit a mine and warned that ships going dark would be treated as hostile.

What X, Reddit and 4chan make of it.

X split between condemning the Riyadh airport strike as terror and blaming Saudi bombing of Yemen, Reddit argued over Saudi incompetence and who's to blame, while 4chan mostly ignored it for oil prices and Ukraine.

X's most-liked voices condemned the strike as terror against civilians, while the replies on the same posts flipped to Yemen's siege and Saudi crimes; Reddit's top comments went after Saudi incompetence and sports-washing instead of the Houthis, and 4chan barely engaged, folding the story into its oil-price and Ukraine talk.

Top comments in two r/worldnews threads, so sarcasm and the sports-washing jokes get more airtime than sober takes; a fair share of the thread was about the Trump-Iran war, which is noise here.

4chan

Only a handful of posts directly addressed the airport strike in a thread dominated by oil prices, Ukraine and unrelated posts, so this is too thin to weigh heavily.
