Yemen forces retake towns near Bab el-Mandeb as coalition strikes Houthis
Yemen's government said its 'Dawn of Yemen' campaign aims to retake all Houthi-held territory. The Saudi-led coalition said 100 jets hit more than 300 'high-value targets', and its navy struck Houthi depots and sea mines in Hodeidah. Government forces said they retook Dhubab, Bab, Hadeid and Mocha port and secured the Bab el-Mandeb strait, which Houthi media denied; they announced a 'strategic offensive' on Sanaa. Explosions rattled Riyadh, and the Houthis claimed attacks on its airport.
Monday 5 October
The day belonged to Yemen, where the government's offensive against the Houthis, backed by Saudi-led coalition air power, moved from announcement to claimed gains from the Red Sea coast to a declared assault on Sanaa. The Houthis disputed some of those claims and said they advanced in the southwest, and Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its backing late in the evening. The fighting sits beside the Iran war, where Tehran and Washington traded ultimatums over Hormuz and the US moved bombers out of Britain.
Elsewhere, Brazil's presidential race went to a runoff with Flávio Bolsonaro ahead of Lula, and Spain's prime minister called a snap election after his housing decrees failed. Russia said it would fight on even as a US proposal for talks with Ukraine emerged, and ship attacks in the Black Sea killed crew. Markets leaned on weak US jobs data and recovering Middle East oil exports.
