Lula wins fourth term in Brazil; Bolsonaro refuses to concede and seeks annulment

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won Sunday's runoff with 51.75% to Flávio Bolsonaro's 48.25%, a lead of nearly 4.4 million votes. He is the first candidate since Brazil adopted runoffs in 1989 to win after trailing in the first round. Speaking in Brasília, Bolsonaro said it was "impossible to acknowledge the result". He cited allegations of vote suppression and the last-minute extension of voting hours, and said he would request annulment.

Monday 26 October

Brazil's Lula won a historic fourth term, and Flávio Bolsonaro is refusing to accept it, saying he will ask for the runoff to be annulled. Lula's win breaks a run of right-wing victories in Latin America, where Venezuela's María Corina Machado also returned home from exile.

The Middle East is the other big thread. Trump says a decision on striking Iran or making a deal is close, while senior Saudi, Pakistani and Turkish officials head to Tehran. Houthi missiles aimed at Riyadh drew coalition strikes on Sanaa. Russia's drone strikes on Ukraine continued, alongside talk of a November peace meeting.

Trump said "there will not be a strike today" on Iran, though he has suggested attacks could resume after the November 3 US elections and has sent more forces toward the Gulf. Iran's foreign ministry says it is ready for "any scenario" but open to diplomacy. Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, Pakistan's army chief Asim Munir and Turkey's intelligence head are due in Tehran on Monday. Netanyahu warned Iran against disrupting Israel's election.

The Houthis claimed a fresh attack on Riyadh airport hours after flights resumed; Saudi authorities have not commented. Yemen's government says 218 Houthi fighters were neutralised in 24 hours, and Taiz remains under Houthi siege.

A Ninth Circuit panel grilled Justice Department lawyers over their emergency request to force California to set aside about 20,000 mail ballots tied to suspected noncitizens. The DOJ wants the state to verify the list within 48 hours. California's leaders and election officials say the push could disenfranchise citizens, with the midterms a little over a week away.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate and opposition leader María Corina Machado greeted supporters from an open-top vehicle in Valencia and urged a democratic transition. What X, Reddit and 4chan make of it.

X split between fraud claims and prediction-market jabs, Reddit cheered Lula's comeback and blamed Meta and Bolsonaro, while 4chan mostly ignored the result and spammed slurs and off-topic filth.

Where they split

X fixated on the two-hour voting extension and prediction-market embarrassment, with fraud talk dominant; Reddit mostly celebrated the comeback and pinned the win on Meta and the Bolsonaro family; 4chan barely engaged with the election itself, and its few political posts were about slurs and Israel rather than the vote.

  • Stolen by the extended vote

Lula only won because a judge extended voting hours nationwide and the result was rigged, so the win is illegitimate.
