The political landscape in Germany shifted dramatically today as the far-right AfD party secured a landslide victory in the Saxony-Anhalt regional election, marking the first time a far-right party has won at the state level since World War II. The result, which saw the AfD claim roughly 44% of the vote, is being hailed by party leadership as a precursor to their national ambitions for 2029, even as established parties begin the difficult work of forming coalitions to keep them out of power.

In the Middle East, the maritime standoff between the U.S. and Iran has escalated into direct ship-to-ship combat. Following yesterday’s U.S. strikes on oil tankers, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) announced it retaliated by firing ballistic missiles at a U.S. aircraft carrier and destroyer in the Strait of Hormuz. While the U.S. maintains its blockade is essential for global energy security, Tehran has warned that future responses will be "faster, heavier, and more painful," abandoning its previous policy of proportionate retaliation.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration’s dual-track peace mission moved from Moscow to Kyiv. After meeting with Vladimir Putin for three hours, envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff arrived in the Ukrainian capital to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. While the envoys described the talks as "meaningful," the reality on the ground remains grim: Ukraine is bracing for another winter of infrastructure attacks, and Zelenskyy’s advisers are warning that the current stalemate threatens both nations with mutual destruction if a breakthrough isn't reached soon.
